I have ran into something I haven't seen before, with my xj. The speedometer will jump all over the place. And when I smash the throttle to say get on the highway it sputters horribly. These problems both surfaced on the way home from ny. At the same exact time. I checked the wiring for the speed sensor. Kinda at a loss for this one so is my old shop foreman from jeep lol.

I forget how the sensors on these work I assume square wave dc. Get a graphing meter and graph the speed sensor with the speed rising and make sure you have consistent square wave. Then check it at the next connection, which I assume is pcm. If its good going into pcm than it either signal coming out or the cluster. I don't know what it is coming out of the pcm. I don't believe its square wave any more. Have to look it up and see.Dan.

Actually if you have a scanner just watch the vehicle speed in data and see if the pcm is seeing consistent road speed.Dan.

May or may not be related. Any codes? Have you checked timing? Unplug the PCm and just make sure the connectors are clean first.Dan.
