  • Wits end....I need help

    Ok vehicle is a 97 XJ 4.0, aw4, 231. What is does.

Occasionally was shutting down while driving. would restart.

Now idling in my driveway shuts down. No CEL on restart at all. Meaning no CEL at all now. Doesn't come on and go off. NO CEL EVER.
    No bus power.
    Cooling fan runs.
    No gauges on dash work

    Changed:
    CPS
    IAC

I have unplugged every sensor I can find and tried to get bus power,
Unplugged the tranny harness, speed sensor.

    Swapped computers.

Flipped power relay box and tried wiggling and pulling wires.

    Unplugged all A/C items.

I need this truck to run.

Any ideas? I have nothing else I know to try. There is something shorting killing the bus power I think. I tried banging on the dash and door switches.

    Help.

Was that a dealer CPS or an aftermarket one?

A lot of aftermarket sensors are hit and miss with the majority being miss.

Check and all fuses and grounds. The CPS was aftermarket but I swapped the the one that was running in the truck out and it was still the same. Scanner picked up shorted IAC one time when it was running and I changed it. It has gotten progressively worse. If the CPS was dead and I unplugged it I should still get a CEL I believe.

Does the CEL come on when you turn the ignition on? Sounds odd but check the cigarette lighter. I had a dime fall in mine and cause all kinds of issues on my truck.

Nope, no CEL EVER. Clearly no bus power. I will get the lighter after shooting. Thanks Pete!

Maybe all the bus lights are blown maybe a surge of power blow them all? You pull the dash apart and try and change the guage cluster?

No. I'm today going after the CCD bus system. I'm certain that is where the issue is. I've disconnected the clock spring, a/c components, all engine sensors, tranny harness, O2's. I'm getting 4.6volts to the engine sensors and I have change and or cleaned all the grounds. I am thinking chafed wire in the cab or a shorted switch.

Oh and I ran the on board diag on the gauges and it all functions properly. If you don't know how to do it, hold the trip reset down and key on the power and let it go. I will perform its own self test.
