yes the joint is different if its CV -I don't care if its CV or not but solid axle is what I really care about. Normally the axle needs to be engaged for 4wd. Solid axle is always engaged

So you have a one piece axle shaft in a disconnect housing?
You can buy cv shafts from any parts store for 50$ have them look it up for a 96-97 zj with abs.
Hell I think I have one sitting in the garage actually.

YES! One piece in the disconnect.

I needed that cheap and easy answer! Seriously, my front end is completely disassembled.

          Next question.

The CV setup has the hub & carrier bearings built in -think its called the spindle. If I wanted to convert back to U-joint would I need to also order a spindle?

Long story short -I had a bad U joint in the front and a friend of mine likes working on 4x4s and needed some cash. He thought he was doing me a favor by getting rid of my custom heavy duty U joint shafts that were crazy expensive and replacing them with $60 autozone CVs. Old shafts got scrapped. 6 months later I need to replace it.

In defense of the CV... it took quite a bit to break it. I was removing a bush in my yard... hooked up the with the brakes on and it choked out my 9K superwinch! That should have been the sign to STOP. But not me, I put the jeep in 4 low and tried to yank it out in reverse and PING!! broken CV. Later it took 2 hours to remove the bush with a john deer 110 backhoe! Friggen tough bush. Still got it out, F YOU BUSH

Ah, well that sucks. The cv's are quite a bit weaker than a normal U-joint. (especially a 760x shaft)
The unit bearing isnt part of the shaft. There is a 36mm nut that holds the outer stub shaft to the bearing assembly. Just remove the nut and separate the bearing. If you just need to get it together than you should be bale to find a shaft at any parts store. I didnt see where you were but I have a good ling side shaft in the garage taking up space in Meriden

I'm in Danielson. I really appreciate your responses and offer to help with parts!

OK -I'm thinking I will just go get a replacement axle for cheap. Then get what I need to make it strong over time. That 760x shaft sounds about right. I think thats the best you can get 27 spline right?

I think I should keep the 27 spline because of my ARB locker. Not sure if I can use the locker with a 30 spline setup and the prices of a 30 spline are pretty high from what I have found.

Get a used replacement shaft from a TJ, 96+ZJ, or 96+ XJ and get some 760X spicers and pop them in

You have been a huge help. I hope to return the favor.

Let me know if you need fuel injectors ultrasonically cleaned for motorcycle or car. Also do powdercoating.
