I've heard of people fucking up the master cylinder by pushing fluid back up through it instead of opening the bleeders to release the extra fluid when collapsing the front caliper(s).

I've seen some people put some rubber hose over vicegrips (to get rid of the grip) then pinch off the soft brake line (this prevents air and fluid from going back up to the master) then opening the bleed valve to release the fluid while collapsing the caliber. If done correctly, you will get no air in the system.

I also have heard of this but I've been working on my own brakes since I've owned a jeep. And everytime I've needed to do them I've done them this way, compress piston with system closed up, put new pads in and bleed after everything is bolted up good. I guess there's a first time for everything but I don't see how it would happen right now all of a sudden.

Why would you bleed for that? You're not putting any air in the system or letting anything out. I'm pretty sure bleeding does literally nothing in that situation, but i could be wrong.

I'd assume if it did happen, it would just happen out of the blue like it did.

Did you take the calipers off the jeep by any chance? It's hard to bleed em if you have the calipers on the wrong side, and is actually a rather common problem.

Replacing the fluid every year can extend brake line life and fluid effectiveness. Brake fluid is hygroscopic and the water can rot the lines out. That's why most people bleed the brakes when changing pads.

this, every time ive bled them after changing pads i do it just to get the fluid looking clear, from the heat and the fluid being used so much it tends to burn and blacken it. i dont bleed them to get the air out just to put fresh fluid in the calipers and wheel cylinders

                never got it fixed

the pedal is basically useless in the first 1/2 of it, but itll lock up viciously and stop however i need it otherwise, i got used to it fast and it feels normal...put about 200+ miles on it since.

i'd like to make the pedal feel better some day, but i got tired of messing with it daily without knowing wtf i was doing

Didn't Will get a new XJ?

That wouldn't have anything to do with this problem.
The XJ valve is a check valve to hold around 15psi in the lines to counter the springs in the drums brakes.
you can either remove the check valve o-ring making the check valve useless or get a ZJ valve that doesn't have the check valve.

leaving the check valve in will cause the rear brakes to drag and make braking quicker.
