  • still vibrations in overdrive!?

i only get vibrations when in overdrive going about 50-65mph as soon as i shut it off the vibes go away..

i thought it was the large double cardan shaft im running upfront but with it removed i still get the vibrations the front shaft does intensify it though..

when i let off the gas the vibes go away, only when im on the pedal and in overdrive are their vibes..

i tried speaking to my mechanic but he wasnt there and i spoke with another guy who said it could be the rear driveshaft out of balance or the ujoints in it could be bad...

theres no play in the rear driveshaft at all...you guys think its a tranny issue or a transfer case issue? the tranny was replace at 60k and i bought the jeep at 67k now it has 94k and ive done periodic fluid changes to it..

after my 3" lift with the stock front shaft i dont recall there being any vibrations but it really doesnt seem the be the new shaft...

Adam i already know your answer lol (its a jeep yo it vibrates)

alrighty, ive replaced the u joints, and the bushings in the rear upper suspension that were shot...still vibrations

i talked to a mechanic today and told him the problems and he seemed 100% dead set that the torque converter was shot...

went to another mechanic today he says it can be a misfire at that speed that im feeling?

talked to a third shop, and they said it can be a few things they really need to test drive it and see, so im going to the third shop tomorrow and dropping it off...i admit defeat lol and im ready for a huge bill...

waht do you guys think abuot these suggestions..

I dont think it would be a torque converter but it could be. and prob wouldnt be a misfire or you will set a code right away. If it makes your whole truck vibrate that would def classify as a type A and a code would be set right away. I was going to suggest U joints but I guess you covered that haha. hmmmmmmm

97 TJ that I think is pretty neat.

only simple thing i didnt do was get the driveshaft balance and looked at, but i really dont think its that...i think i would feel the vibration at the same speed even if i wasnt in overdrive....

same thing goes for pinion angle i believe

If you elimated those things maybe its somthing as simple as your tires being unbalanced, or maybe one or more of your tires has a shifted belt in the tire from wheeling, my front left tire has a shifted belt and it vibes at 40 and goes away.

alright well got my jeep back from the mechanic, he put it on the lift tested 4 wheel took it for a drive and everything...heres the scoop..

front rotors are warped/shot cause steering shimmy when braking ---i already knew this

driver side CV shaft is going cuase it clicks on right turns -- i already knew this

and for the vibration he said he looked over the tranny, tc and the rear shaft and he said everything is absolutely fine..

he said he feels the vibes when getting on it and in overdrive..so mostly all the gears he said he feels the vibes..i only notice it really in overdrive but maybe im just used to it..

anyhow he had the rear end up and was looking at the tires and he said they looked like they were jumping all over the place..meaning that they werent a TRUE circle if that makes sense maybe they are a bad set or something...

ive had this issue BEFORE i went wheelin for the first time with these tires so i doubt i messed them up...ive rotated front to back a few times and still have the vibes and i even had the spare on for a few days and there were vibrations...i never thuogh it could be the tires and it might not be but thats what he thinks..

he says the rims were fine, shafts seem fine it was just the tire...could it just simply be unbalanced..i know one of my tires has no weights on them they fell off but this was recently...

he also didnt like the way they balanced them..they put weights on like both sides of the rims and on some like randomly scattered...

sorry for the novel what do you guys think..

wednesday my buddy in his WJ is gonna come over and im gonna put on his 32" bfg at's and see if the vibes go away...

Now that i think of it my fathers wj has a slight vibe in overdrive and his jeep is completely stock. It could just be an overdrive gear issue with those transmissions. Or maybe because the driveshaft is moving that much slower in overdrive you just get vibes then.

lets see not much i spent 26$ on 2 new u joints for the rear driveshaft, and i spend 85$ on new bushings and ball joint for the upper a arm in the rear suspension and i took it my local mechanic i usually go to and he didnt charge me anything but i gave a 20$ to the dude who worked on it..

if u add in the gas to drive to my dads shop i really dont know lol but thats splitting hairs...really not that much its just annoying..

im going to take it back to my mechanic hopefully saturday and see what he says now since it wasnt what he thought..

check your rear pinion angle.... mine was off a little and causes vibes when i get off the gas.... on the gas its fine once i get off all hell breakes loose only when above 50 tho... ive heard of the opposite of mine happening becuase of this so check to see ifyour pinion angle is where its supposed to be at... usually the lift throws it off
