  • dana 30 transplant

hey, wondering if anyone knew where to get a wealth of knowledge as how to remove a dana 30 diff, ring, and pinion assembly? never done one of these before and im swapping the differential from my old 95 to my 96 as the ring and pinion gears are totally wasted from bearings that went bad....

I was going to just swap the whole axle but its cheaper, and from what i understand, easier to just swap out the diff and pinion gear....or am i going about it bass ackwards?

Swap the whole axle. If you done know how to swap the diff your not going to know how to check the backlash, pinion depth and pinion preload that your going to have to check swapping diffs.

well if i can get it out, i got a mechanic that i trust that will put it into my other primary jeep, just getting it out undamaged and ready to roll is the thing im worried about. i dont wanna fuck something up and then have to either pay extra or have to fix it and do an axle swap anyway.

if you pull just the diff make sure you mark (bearings and such so it goes back together the same way it came out but it's recommended you use a master overhaul kit.

Id say you are going about it ass backwards.... just swap the axle.
to set the diff up properly you are going to need to reshim everything most likely.
and this will leave you needing new bearings, seals, shims, yada yada yada.

take 2 hours and swap the axles yourself.... you really cant fuck it up

alright i suppose ill start with that, hopefully all of it comes together quick enough. anything to watch out for in particular in doing an axle swap? I know for sure upper and lower control arms, tie rods, lower shock mounts, pop off the clip for the coils, any and all brake stuff, driveshaft...did i miss anything?

disconect the trackbar from the axle, sounds like your on the right track.
it sounds like alot when you list it like that, but its really not.

yeah ive swapped out almost every piece of a dana 30 before, minus the axle itself. so im relatively familiar with what needs to be done, just need a nice day to do it really. thanks everyone! the overwhelming experience is a HUGE help to tap into

I would say it is faster and easier to swap the whole axle than just the gears even with all the tools.

this... it takes but maybe about 2 to 3 hours if you have the tools, shit I've done most of my work in my driveway
