  • 4.0l engines...

Was wondering what engines would go onto my 2000 xj...I know the older 4.0's have distributor caps and such and theres a few less sensors.... so would it be any 97+ that would fit from only xj's? or would they fit from tj's as well?

I wish i had a 97 to 99 because those engines are so much cheaper....

Any way to superimpose the older engines into a 2000? or would I have to do the whole wiring harness as well?

And my bottom end of my engine is shot, but the top end is good. If i buy a 97-99 engine, can i just swa my current top half to the other engine's bottom half?

if you go with an older engine, youll need to swap everything(motor mounts/a/c , intake etc over and make mounts for the coil rail as old heads dont have the threads for it. exhaust ports are slightly different also

its been done plenty of times though

Pretty sure he only means the block. I think he's keeping everything from the head up

I would just swap the whole engine. Your 2000 has the 0331 head which is prone to cracking. I wouldn't go through all that work swapping just the lower end if your head might crack.

Any '91+ block should work, all you have to do is remove the distributor in the new engine and put your cam position sensor in where the distributor was. There are a few threads on jeepforum.com on how to set it up. I would use the head on the "new" engine if it is not a 2000-2001 engine.
