  • School me on an AW4

Not too good with automatic transmissions so I'm wondering. What makes the AW4 shift? Is it vacuum or servos?

What makes the torque converter lock and unlock? When its not under a load should it unlock even at highway speeds? (call it 65mph)

Servos apply bands. The computer controls solenoids that make it shift.
On the highway the aw4 wont just come out of lockup, if you force it out of 4th gear lockup it will go to third no lockup. If you manually shift to third it will however go into lockup.

The TCM or TCU controls the shift solenoids and TC lockup based on speed and rpm gained from the computer.

      What's wrong with yours?

Here's the deal with mine. When im coming downhill on the highway no matter the speed or anytime the TC is locked and I reduce the load by letting off the gas the TC will unlock. To get it to lock back up I usually bring back the engine load to where it was (sometimes more) and the TC will lock back up again.

What's with that? Is it normal and I've just forgot what its like to drive a jeep that isn't always struggling on the highway since I just geared it
