  • Broken bolt question...

So, while putting my lift on today, I managed to snap all 4 of the bolts that hold the rear shocks up on top....I drilled 2 holes out without a problem, but it seems like the other two are harder to drill out..But, I was wondering if any of you had a similar problem or this exact problem. The brackets up top seem to look like you can change them out somehow, but you have to go under the carpet?

Soo, what is your solution to such a problem? I always wanted to know how people go about doing this...simply just by drilling the older bolt out and tapping it with a new thread? Orr what? I would like an easy way out please (especially since my drill buts SUCK)

As far as I know, this happens with almost every XJ.

I used an impact hammer to knock the nuts out of the top then fishwired new ones in.

I've seen people blast the broken bolt with an air chisel. The broken piece goes up into the little pocket that is in the floor there. Then you just stick another bolt in there and the broken bolt keeps it from spinning.

i cut the floor out where they were, blasted them up, welded new ones in up top and then patched the cutouts back in.

yup. easiest/quickest fix is pounding them out with the air punch and fishing bolts through the top
