So I have this humming noise that becomes increasingly louder as I increase speed in my 96 XJ. I am led to assume it might be a wheel bearing, however I am unsure. Has anyone else encountered this problem and if so, how expensive or difficult of a job is this going to be to fix?

well humming noise could be alot of things, im not even going to try and throw out guesses but i can tell you how to check the wheel bearings and eliminate that. jack up the front end and grab the wheel and try to move it up and down. it shouldent have any play. if it moves up and down or side to side you wheel bearing is loose and is the likely source of the noise. you can buy the hole wheel bearing/hub assembly new at n e autoparts store between 25-45 bucks depending on weather or not you get OEM on Made in China haha. its not that hard to replace 3 bolts hold the hub to the knuckle and then like 1 1/4" for the axle into the hub.#becauseJoeNitro

As for the price of a front unit bearing I would drop the money on a nice timken bearing which can be had at www.rockauto.com for a decent price but definitely not for 25-45 bucks. I have never seen a bearing that cheap. Also the axle nut is not a 1.25" nut but a 36mm nut.
