  • TERRIBLE belt squeal

Ok so, when I start my jeep, my belt squeals like a pig getting raped in the anus. My voltage gauge reads about 9v, but once I rev it up and let it warm up, the belt stops squealing and my voltage gauge goes back to normal. I would normally say bad belt but it appears to be ok and its not very old. Its got about 1/4 to 1/2" of play, which I believe isn't too tight. Its got a new water pump, PS pump, and idler pulley. I just don't know what's causing it. Any ideas? Fan clutch? Also my red "GEN" light comes on on the dash sometimes when its squealing really bad..I don't think the alternator would cause this squealing right? Idk, its annoying. Thanks for any help.

either tighten it or buy a new belt.
No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

is your defrost on when this happens? The ac compressor is kicked on for defrost and sometimes mine squeals in the morning.

Replace the belt. When its off free spin the alternator. It could have a bad bearing causing a lot more load on the belt

pour water on it if the squealing goes away you need a new belt.

you know, now that you mention it... i have hood vents, and a bit of water gets in there when it rains. it rained yesterday and when i started it, it didnt squeal... im just gonna grab a new belt for shits and giggles. only thing is, something had to cause it to go bad. its not an old belt, nor a cheapo from autzone either. hmm.. ill just replace it and check everything else while its off. thanks guys.

Edit: just poured water on it and it stopped squealing, guess I'm off to get a new belt. Also to answer crosbike, the squeal does come back after its gone away when I put my heat on. Could it just be that the belt is bad or would something else cause this?
