  • removing engine (XJ)

so I'm pretty sure I have everything unbolted the 4 bolts from the block to the bellhousing and all accessories and sensors are removed and engine mounts. Almost have it off the shoulders but didn't make it any farther, am I missing something or does it still just have to clear the output shaft? Was hoping to leave that shield attached to the bellhousing to keep the torque converter w/tranny

Did you unbolt the torque converter from the flex plate?

nope, didn't know I had to, never worked with an auto tranny before.... do I have to remove the flex plate? FSM instructions just say the engine to tranny bolts

No pull the inspection cover and pull all the converter bolts. You will need to rotate the flex plate around to get them out.

i took out the four bolts from the engine-tranny two lower and those bitch top ones, so I have to take the flexplate out with the engine?

correct, it stays attached to the engine, the torque converter will stay on the transmission once you unbolt it. also make sure you got the 2 inverted torx bolts from way up top of bellhousing if it has them

theres 2 bolts that hold a shield on that ya gotta remove too. they are kinda hard to get at if you still have the manifolds attatched

no matter how many times i swap a tranny/engine i always forget about those 2

thanks guys, pics to come soon of the new toy, and in case anyone wants to know, you have to drill a ton of your own holes to get xj accessories to fit on a WJ block
