  • My black xj project.

Well, I'm buying a daily driver so I decided to make a build thread as things get more interesting in the future. I'll start this thread from around late spring 2012 and just give a brief picture based overview.

So I had these Waggy 44's with a tnt truss laying around.

And my jeep looked like this.

Then I bought these long arms.

    Put them on.

    Got some frame stiffeners.

Did some work on my bumper and it looked like this.

Pulled the rear, then the front.

    Welded on front stiffeners.

Threw on a waggy pitman arm.

    Rolled the front axle under.

    Lined it up and stuff.

Started to weld in my drivers side slider.

Started getting the rear together with U-bolt eliminator Kit.

Did that and put in a hack-n-tap sye and new drive shaft.

Started to get everything else assembled.

Tires mounted and balanced on some orange rims.

I reused my old 1 ton steering, had to cut it down. Sleeves are smaller then I would have liked.

Then I had to go to school and Its sitting in the driveway looking like this.

It drives down the street and stops almost, It needs a bigger master cylinder. It also needs the rear shocks to go through the floor cause they are way to big for the stock body side mount. The sliders need to be finished welded and some tie-ins made to the frame. It also needs bigger tires for sure and lockers. The future will hopefully bring a cage or something and I've always loved chop tops and stuff.

So today, for $1400 I bought a 99 Cherokee sport with 130,000 miles. New battery, water pump, radiator, alternator, catalytic converter and like 1000 miles on the tires. The thing doesn't have any rust on it. I think the original owner had a dog as the interior is a little ratty, but nothing that I can't deal with. All it really needs is a new headliner, a good scrubbing, and some seat covers.

So my black jeep is officially a trail rig.

Its pretty serious...I cut holes in my hood. Lets the hot air out, could care less what it looks like. Im probably making drip pans for underneath them, I have some thin aluminum sheet kicking around.

                  Does this mean you're back???

Kinda disappeared for a bit there, build looks good too
No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

Never left, just went to school and shit. And I don't post to often because my sarcasm doesn't translate into writing as evident above.

                      question....

do people REALLY have that big of issues with cooling that they do all these hacktacular things? i thought the silly hood spacers were bad... but cutting up a nice hood?
I rock my jeep in 100 degree weather sitting still on the trail with AC pumping alllllll day, and have never had an issue.

other than that i like the jeep.

Mine was getting pretty hot, I sometimes popped my hood in down time between obstacles. and I guess I'm a little weary of the head cracking since its a 2000. I spent 20 minutes on that before it started to rain, its not done yet.

A this point my plan is to spend as little money as possible on this jeep, since I consider it done-ish. I don't want a Taurus e-fan or $20 LeBaron hood vents, I want holes lol

When the time comes Im cutting the roof of the damn thing and not thinking twice

The later Jeeps have problems with vapor lock. I tried a bunch of different things to remedy it without having to pop the hood in between obstacles. Now with a cowl hood it seems ok, but on real hot days I still have to pop it and let it cool down. I was close to the point of cutting some holes in the hood. Still might be.

shocks that wont bottom out when I hit a pebble. 7" stockers FTW!!! cheap bump stops of some sort will get rigged up. nothing special just something that will work.
