  • Project Daddy's Little Girl

After a riveting 7 year career in the family, the good ol' family TJ has rusted out. And by rusted out, I mean the belly pan is basically on the ground, there are holes in the frame, and any piece of sheet metal (including control arms, shocks, coils, etc) are all rusted to shit. It spent many of winters plowing the driveway and cruising the town as a great get around car, but it finally gave out. So, after much discussion with my dad, he has given us a budget to fully restore it to showroom condition...ish.

    Plans are as follows.

-New frame, cleaned up and painted with POR-15
    -New/used stock belly pan
-New suspension, Rough Country 2.5" lift with new coils and 2.2 shocks
-31/10.5R15 BFG AT's on black steelies will stay
-New OEM Upper and lower control arms
-Dana 35 needs replacing, all mounts are very rusty
-Dana 30 needs a good clean up, but is usable
-New bushings everywhere; body mounts, trackbars, shocks, motor, etc.
-Tub will be getting new paint; gunmetal gray with flat black grille?
-Tub will also be getting sanded down and undercoated inside. It is still in pretty good shape with only 2 small rust holes that we'll fix.
-New gas tank/OEM skid if necessary, if not we'll clean this one up
-Hood will have the dents popped out
-Warn basic bumpers/sliders (a bit of a dream, but we'll see.)
-New fuel lines, brake lines, etc.
-2.5l, AX-5, and NP231 will stay since it still purrs like a kitten
-New seats or a good set of seat covers.
-New Dash pieces if we can find em, if not we'll just clean these up shiny
    -New Stickers/Decals all around

If anyone has any parts they want to donate let us know!!! Anybody is welcome to come lend a hand if they wish too I'll supply Natty Light for you. This will most likely be a summer long project for us since we'll have weekends mostly

What we're workin with (this was probably 6 years ago, lol)

Most recent (a day before the rustout last weekend)

We'll get some pics of the rust later.

Parts are on the way already. Just ordered a Rough Country 2.5" kit with 2.2s, a full set of OEM control arms, and both front and rear track bars.

Im picking up the new frame hopefully next week and I can start prep for the POR15. Im hoping to have a rolling chassis within a month. depending on when I can get parts. Right now the biggest two things i need are a new rear and an oem trans pan

97 TJ that I think is pretty neat.

So we finally got a weekend day to work on this and really dive into it. This thing is in horrible shape. I can't believe we were actually driving it for at least the last year. The rust on everything is just unreal. I snapped some pics for all to see. We have a nice pile of parts accumulating including the RC 2.5" lift, new Energy Suspension body mount bushings, and new trackbars and control arms from Crown. Andrew and I went to pick up the new frame today too. $650 for a mint frame and belly pan and it was 20 minutes away. Not a terrible deal if you ask me. It is looking like we are going to need a new donor Dana 30 and Dana 35. I'm sure you all will understand why shortly. Here are the pics of today's progress.

                    Parts pile

New frame Just needs minimal prep and undercoat.

                    Just getting into it

                    That's a problem

                    Front axle cancer

                    Rear axle cancer

Check this out. The driver rear UCA mount was completely detached from the frame. Who knows how long we were driving around like that

                    Both axles out

                    As it sits for now

Use it during the winter and bathe the metal in road salts?
