the tranny will bolt onto any 4.0 from a jeep

the tranny and t-case must share the same spline count

i dont know what year your old case is or how new "newer" is for the tranny so i can't give you a black and white answer

if you hav an automatic, 91-96 are the same, and i beleive 87-90. no idea about newer xj's, except they fucked it all up.

in 1990 the t-case input spline went from 21 to 23 spline, so you will need a matching tranny.

soo , whilst hunting for 231's for my '98 tranny.... I need 90 and up? good to know

as far as i can tell it happened in late 1990

some 90's came high output with a non vac disco front axle too
