My jeep buying calculator is spot on. I have no interest in buying, but i inquire on things constantly.

Why the heck isnt your brother keeping this and selling the rust bucket for some change. Seems like you have that parts on hand to make it decent.

That's the plan. Now we have enough parts from his 96 to put a nice 4in lift and 31/32s under it. Think it would sell to the edverage person easier that way?

$4500 for a shot xj just because it has the motor rebuilt? You can find a mint xj with
An engine that wasn't rebuilt for way less than that with 1/2 the miles. Thats your problem. Nice build, nice 4.0, but GLWTS

I think you should keep it because your not getting your money back, until months of waiting for the right sap to come along and you settle for less. sooo yeah, good luck. or part out.

The problem is, noone wants a built 4.0 thats in a beat ass cherokee. There is a reason you can pick up a 4.0 for $100 bucks in good shape and throw it in

97 TJ that I think is pretty neat.

For anyone who is interested in what the 4.0 has done to it.

So I picked up another XJ a month or so ago that needed a new head, its an 01 and the head was not repairable. I had planed on just doing a quick head swap, but the more I looked the less I liked so out came the engine. The cam was starting to wear, rings were shot, expansion plugs were almost rotted through, pistons were scuffed badly and the timing chain was slopped out. The crankshaft main journals were at minimum spec, main housing bores were at maximum and the factory put in a half set of .001 under bearings. But other than that it was great...

                New parts and labor:
                Clean and magnaflux.
Block was align honed to minimum spec so I can use STD bearings without Excessive oil clearances.
                Balanced rotating XXXembly.
                ARP rod bolts.
                .020 over Speed Pro pistons
Block decked to bring the pistons to about .005 in the hole for 9:1 compression and tighten the squish.
                Comp Cams 68-232-4
Pre 1997 timing set and bolt with spring loaded pin.
Mopar performance valve springs & retainers
New head casting with some porting and chamber cleanup and performance valve job.
Magnaflow high flow cat and Dynomax catback
                AFE intake.
                4 hole injectors.

There any interest in JUST the motor from anyone here?

In the process of building another one for my jeep but I'd rather put in a diesel than a 4.0. It could be finished to identical specs as this one or something that the buyer wants.

Already have the new pistons, comp cam, gasket set, ARP bolts ect ect and did the head porting. Kind of on the back burner right now so to speak but it could be ready to run in about 2 or 3 weeks if someone wants it. I'd let it go for like $2,500 but ill have to see what the total bill is before I can say 100% on a price.

                  progress pics of the 4.0...

                  port work

flow test to make sure it improved over a stock head

bore .20 over and hone (missing is a pic of the line hone)

                  decking block

                  valve job

making sure valve job isn't fucked up

modify head for new springs needed to correctly operate the new Comp Cam (stock ones may "work" but it's half assed)

resurface manifold side of the head

                  resurface head

                  short block mostly done

few other steps in there aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand

the turd in the punch bowl

so much work for a 4.0 and so much money... $2500 , although there is people out there that will pay it. ive seen people do it before at work. Drop 3,000 for a reman motor. Although for 2500 you could get a 5.3L w/ trans and computer and the brackets/fab work down to make it work

i meant that's what i would sell my 4.0 for, if you go to the shop and want this built by them you're probably looking at $3,500 easy to get everything done that this one had. it could be less if the block doesn't need everything machined.

can't put that 5.3 motor in the jeep in a day or so. even then it's still just a used motor so who knows, could be 1 wheeling trip away from spinning a bearing and blowing up. my 4.0 only had 80k on it and ran fine when it came out.... already started to spin 2 bearings. then again it was beat on hard by the original owner but hey, it was low miles.

people buy reman motors with much less done to them for more money.

I don't think you'd be hardpressed at all to sell that motor separate.
No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

So is anyone on here or their friends even interested in this? ill take reasonable offers and can add some 31s along with some JKS and clayton lift parts of another jeep we are upgrading.

I put about 50 miles on it today and it has some power to it bit with a properly tuned comp I know it will have more.

Polishing up a turd. Thing is actually pretty nice.

Been driving this for about a week now, surprisingly nice and weird. It's the first stock XJ I've ever had.

you know im looking for a nice stock XJ

however im going down south and purchasing that stocker to start over with...in fact i just found this

                                http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/4033711558.html

for around 200 bucks at a junkyard i can get a running XJ motor....even if this one needs it. these inland NC and southern vehicles are 110% rust free. not saying your XJ isnt rust free because for a northeast jeep its CLEAN. but that jeep is 1800 bucks. i think your asking price is a little high imho. GLWTS tho
