I'm getting into photography and learning little by little on how to manipulate my camera. What tips/tricks do you have to improve epicness of a photo? I was mainly looking at Wills photo where it's of HM's front end and the backround is sorta blury but still able to define what it is.

Im using a Fujifilm Finepix S1500

What picture are you referring to?

Learn composition. Some people have an eye for it, some dont. Read up on it. Rule of thirds.

Learn the controls of your camera...cant say im familiar with that one, but it looks to have at least some manual control

blurred background/sharp object = depth of field. achieved with adjustment of the f-stop aperture.

the smaller the f-stop number (F1.8 for example) the more depth of field you will have (blurred background/sharp object, or vice versa)...thats a very general/simple way of looking at it.

a camera like that will be limited with control, but still has some.

you can normally achieve depth of field on a limited camera at a longer focal length, like you did there (more zoom)

beyond that, unless you have a different lens (on a DSLR), you arent going to be able to achieve stuff like this (DOF on far less zoom)

this was shot on a 50mm F/1.4 lens, which is a very low f-stop ability. hence why i can put stuff out of focus behind a large object like the jeep without zooming in

only way youre going to achieve something close to that on the camera youre using is back up away from the subject and zoom in on it, and focus on the part you want highlighted...and frame it as such and take the pic...just like you did with the flare shot.

Now, when it comes to flash, when is the appropriate time to use it?

you can use flash as a fill-light if you know how to use it correctly with your manual settings...otherwise in complete darkness when you need to take a pic of something..otherwise never

i havent mastered flash photography myself, or even photography in general...but i havent had to learn flash photog until now...still in my own learning stage there

if you go to jersey everything in the background is either auto hazy or orange tans

start experimenting with all of the setting and do your shots on things you enjoy

it's all about knowing your camera...play around with the settings like a few people have said...get to know what your camera is capable of doing...unfortunately you're not going to get pictures like will gets, because you aren't using a DSLR or the lenses he has...but you definitely can get some good pictures if you know what you're doing

Like everyone else said, know your camera. I KNOW my Camera is a piece of shit, so I know to only take pictures during the day when the skies are clear and I have steady hands, or else...

                          Case and point:

That was taken with a Canon Powershot A590. The sun was perfect and cast just the right amount of light at the perfect angle (I just happen to be wanting to take pics late in the day) and I used the rest of my body to hold the camera as still as possible. I doctored it up in photoshop a little. I dabble in photography only with my firearms. Everything else, I let everyone else take the pics.

This is sorta what i wanted to do, the 5.0 badge in the backround is blurry to where it draws attention to it, and my bros fox body is nice and crisp, just wish i had his front wheel turned more to draw some attention to the rims.
