  • So im gonna hydrolock my old lawnmower in the name of science.

I had a pretty good idea today. I have an old lawnmover, it's pretty fucked up, blades broken, self propel clutch thing is bad , it runs like shit and it wasnt really a good mower even when it was new but... I can get it running for long enough to hook a garden hose right up the intake.

I've always kinda wondered what happens internally when you hydrolock an engine, so i'll prolly get bored after a few hours of working on my gear install tomorrow, then as a break for an hour or two do this, take that baby apart and post some pictures of any carnage that ensues.

    Stay tuned.

Yeah but the bible doesn't mention the hydrolocking of lawnmowers to the best of my knowledge, so it's ok for me to experiment.

And yeah i did it yesterday and it was cool, i'll get my pics up later on, when im not busy.

The bible specifically says, tend thy sheep to the fruit of the land. Meaning they eat the grass and lawnmowers are the devil

Ok, I wish it was more interesting but it was an informative experiment nonetheless.

Yeah so i dont have any pic's of me actually locking it, but it wasnt that cool to look at anyways, imagine a red lawnmower running, then me putting a garden hose up to the intake and then hearing a loud clunk and then it stopping.

I hydrolocked it 3 times total, this mower just didn't want to die, the first two times I did it, then took the plug out, pulled the starter a few times, put the plug back in, sprayed some ether in it and it started right back up again.

For the 3rd time I manually opened the throttle wide open on the carburetor and then hosed it. After this it did not start back up again, I could get it to turn over but not start.

So yeah, here it is after I took the engine off the mower,

The oil was kinda milky, and after all this oil leaking out through the ccv onto my driveway I decided to drain it.

When I drained the oil this little piece of metal came out.

So yeah, took the head off, besides being caked in carbon fouling (prolly due to me running it on diesel with some ether mixed in a few weeks ago, besides knocking a little it ran great though) it looked just fine to me.

Dont know if that massive dig on the cylinder wall has anything to do with the chunk of metal I found.

I'm disappointed, I didn't even bend the rod.
                          \

Everything is in decent shape still.

                          Conclusion:

If your Jeep is built half as well as a Toro lawnmower then dont worry if you hydrolock it, just pull the plugs, clean it out and change the oil and you should be just fine. I locked this thing when it was well over full throttle and it still didnt damage anything, besides the mystery chunk of metal which may even be unrelated with all the other abuse this engine has seen over the past couple weeks. It's been run without oil, run on diesel fuel, run with Styrofoam peanuts and soap dissolved in the gas and whole bunch of other stuff.

Like I said, I'm disappointed, I wanted to see something cool, honestly if I had the desire to put it back together it would probably run again, looks like it just needed to be cleaned out.

And I still never found out what the hell that chunk of metal came from.
