Ok, I went to see it. Cosmetically its fine, not awesome, but good enough. The owner claims he is the 2nd owner, the first being the original owner who is a mechanic. It was obviously that thing this sat for long periods of time. Besides being 23 years old with only 70k on the clock, the leather was all dried and cracked, rotors were very rusty, as was the engine bay. The undercarriage was also pretty rusty, at least the frame and control arms were. I didn't poke around on the frame like I should have... is frame rot common on these? Surface rust wouldnt bug me, but deeper would. The axles and steering components looked good. All the fluids are at good levels and the right color, though the tranny fluid was a little burned it seemed ok. It took a few attempts at cranking it to get it to start, and once it did there was a good amount of belt squeak. However, the engine had no bad noises, and idled like a rock. The exhuast also sounded great. The alternator belt was shot, probably had 2-3 inches of play in it. The middle belt, which looked to me like the oil pump belt, was also loose. I took it for a spin and it felt good until the alternator belt just broke and the battery light came on, at which point it had trouble hitting higher rpms for lack of voltage, I would assume. The brakes were weak, but that may just be from rusted rotors. Ive never driven an rrc with good brakes so i dont know how strong they should be. They felt good enough to be road worthy if keeping a decent distance on the highway. Overall, I feel as though its solid. I told the owner to give me a couple days to think about it, and ultimately I would want the two belts replaced before I drove it home. I said if I did buy it, I would pay $1200 max and require he honor the lemon law if it dies within 30 days. I feel as though, if run daily, this thing would be a champ... but thats a big bet to hedge against a jeep grand cherokee that I would otherwise get, 10 years newer. My worries;
- The alternator is seizing causing the belt to loosen/break, though it spun freely when the engine was off
- Weak brakes; could need a new master... could also just need to wear off the rust.
- No AC... no big deal but would be convenient and probably a b1tch to fix
- One of the window motors was sitting in the trunk... again no big deal but convenient none the less2001 TJ
