But this so incredibly common in the motorsport world, you should actually be used to it. Why is it any surprise they modified the vehicle to do something spectacular?

It's the same as everyone calling their competition rig or KOH buggy a CJ or a Land Rover or an XJ. How much of those vehicles are actually Facotry, OEM parts outside of the bolted on body panels? Same with the racing world. The subarus and toyotas that race in rallies are hardly in their stock configuration anymore. They share some similarities, but the rest comprises mostly of a custom chassis, roll cage, new suspension and required safety features.
