fawking vista, that's what... i told it not to update automatically, but it apparently listens to orders worse than me and stole mah bandwidth to update itself i need to reinstall steam, when it crashed i think it bugged. every time i try starting it it tells me there's a missing file

Sounds like you may need to. Luckily all you have to do is reinstall steam, login and maybe redownload L4D2, but since you already own it, you don't have to repurchase it.
