To get a bike or not? Those of you who know me...is this a good idea?


To those that don't know me but ride...your input?

What kind should I get? I am not looking to get crazy power nor am I a fan of the rice rockets..also not looking to get a Harley for my first bike.

I don't want to toot my own horn here but:

My best advise would be a Suzuki Katana 600, Suzuki GS 500, or OLDER Ninja 600. The katana is a low horse power heavy 600 with a steel frame (80hp and about 500lbs). They can be found pretty cleap (about $1500) and because of the cost and the steel frame, if you drop it (which you more then likely will when you first start off) you wont do any serious damage to the bike or care about it if the plastics are scraped up. Any bike with an aluminum frame could bend more easily or crack if its dropped. An older Ninja is something below 97. After 97 they grew a sack. I would also recomend a bike with carbs because they react slower then fuel injection. If I stared off on the bike I have now (120hp and 410lbs) the chance of me being here right now would be a lot slimmer. Older bikes will tend to be more forgiving. If you don't like either bike I listed because of their "sporty" feel, Honda makes a small Rebel which isn't a bad starter bike. Suzuki also makes some low horsepower cruisers too which would be nice to start on. Still stick to the same principals though; heavy, slow, forgiving.

With that being said, TAKE THE RIDERS SAFETY COURSE!!!!!!! They teach you the basics and, best of all, its not your bike so if you drop it, who cares. The class is seriously worth every penny and might save your life one day. Plus you get your license at the end. So just get your permit first, then take the class.

Once you start riding, start reading books about it. I strongly recommend Total Control by Lee Parks. He breaks stuff down and actually makes you realize things you are doing wrong. After reading it practicing, I can easily drop a knee into a turn, stop quicker and safer, and have general better control and feel for my bike.

Lastly, avoid stupid shit. 90% of near accidents I have are my own fault. I`ll be the first to admit I love to wheelie or do a stoppie but really its not smart on my part. I can honestly say I haven't done either in almost a year and I've noticed a ton less "oh shit" moments.

honda shadow spirit 750. can be bought in the 3g range. great starter bike. look cool, can look really cool very easily. no crazy power but more than enough to cruise around and have some fun

but i have a sport bike and a dual sport, i rode both today and the dual sport is cool as hell. goes like 70mph tops, gets 65 mpg, and i rode trails, a sand pit and then bombed home. and it feels sweet like your doing something illegal like riding a dirtbike on the road.. but your not...
