Here's one of my original routes broken down, this route was made with taking the Jeep in mind so it focuses mainly on western CO and eastern UT.. but still a good route.
Take I80 west through PA backcountry, then switch to I76 then I70 in Ohio which bring you down through Indianapolis, St. Louis, then Kansas City. Get LOTS of energy drinks for the ride through kansas bc theres NOTHING after that til you get into colorado. I70 goes right into Denver.
From there take I70 down through Vegas into LA, passing right between Mojave Nat'l Park and Death Valley, take your pick between seeing one, none or both. Also you can hop down towards Joshua Tree Park as well, but its a bit more south and a tad out of the way.
IMHO, its not worth seeing the grand canyon. its supa far out of the way from anything, and is a HUGE tourist trap. from everything i've heard from people, Canyonlands Nat'l Park is 100x better, bigger, and less "known" so less touristy.
Once you get to California, you better damn well drive up US1 and see the Big Sur Coast.. its basically my main reason to get out there and I'll probably drive over the cliffs into the ocean while listening to some Brand New song and die happy. But anyway- once you're there go as far north as you'd like and gas money allows, then find a route home. You can blast through I80 from San Francisco all the way back to CT, and that passes through Sacramento, Salt Lake City, Medicine Bow Forest in Wyoming, Lincoln and Omaha Nebraska, Des Moines Iowa, Chicago, Toledo, Cleveland, then your back in PA.
My current trip, taking my Subaru, is to take 80 to Chicago, then blast WAY up north through Wisconsin and Minnesota to the fancy town of Minot, North Dakota to see my BFF4L Tom at his little house on the tundra. Then stay way up north and pass through "the breaks" in montana and then onto Glacier Nat'l Park. From there go through Spokane Washington, south through Oregon and stopping at Redwood Nat'l Park in California. Then drive all the way down the coast to LA. From there I'm still not sure what to do yet, to either go up I15 through Vegas to I70 back to Utah, Moab, and Western Colorado or stay down south and ride through New Mexico and Arizona. Hopefully I'll have enough money to to both
From there I wanna swing around wherever, maybe bounce into the Texas panhandle just to say I did, then the last stop is the Smokey Mountains, then back up home.

Ive driven from seattle WA to CT, going through montana, idaho, the long way around yellowstone etc..I HIGHLY reccomend it..Its an awsome experience and i plan on going out to yellowstone again...And if you dont mind sleeping in the truck you can do it pretty damn cheap as long as you grocery shop and make your own meals rather then buying them at fast food resturaunts etc along the way.98 Cherokee, D30/8.25 w/4.56s locked F/R -- 3 link front IRO springs rear with shackle relocation, one ton steering w/heims, hybrid cage under contruction, 33'' KM2's

Do it! Adam's advice isn't bad!
I have driven coast to coast 4 times, I have been all over the US in a vehicle except for Washington and Alaska. There's so many cool things to see and do. I someday want to drive to Alaska, would love to drive to Patagonia and I want to ride the Transamerican Highway and Baja on an Enduro someday!HOONIGAN FOR LIFE

someday i wanna do it, have a rig capable of making the trip and wheeling along the way. Do some of the passes in colorado, black bear pass esp., go through moab, down to zion national park. keep heading down to flagstaff then to the grand canyon again, accross to nevada, hit up vegas and area 51 cause i think that would be cool. then drive through death valley and johnson valley and other things in cali.
basically want to just explore in colorado, utah, arizona, nevada, cali for like 2 months.
some day..........No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.
