Anyone know anything about these gadgets?

I was lookin into getting one used/new (not from any store) and really don't know shit about the whole 2g 3g thing. 3gs phones are too expensive.

jailbreaking is opening up the restrictions on the phone that Apple puts on the device allowing you have more freedom on the device to customize it. A lot of good stuff on this site and very great explanations of the things you can do http://www.iphoneheat.com/

What carrier do you plan on using the phone with that you aren't looking to purchase it from a store?

i suppose you can put it like this..
first gen iphone, is like browsing the internet on dialup (EDGE which is 2.5G).
3g is like dsl. on a old slowish computer.
3gs is like dsl on new computer. great video cam/photo. with all phones wifi is available. all the things that were weak points they fixed with the latest version. with the newer phones the phone part works much better because of the 3g network usage. the improvement of speed, camera, compass in the gs makes it so much better. if you take pictures/video on your phone gs the only choice. where to get one cheap? no idea.

I can play around with them, but the iphone was the first phone that was really tempting for me to make changes to. Blackberrys are more open from the beginning, so I was able to do what I wanted with them. Apple is stupid and doesn't even let you customize things like your texts sounds which is so annoying when you work with 13 people and almost everyone has the same phone. We look around when someone receives a text like a dog who lost track of a tennis ball

Are you not eligible for upgrade that you'd buy one elsewhere? Unless you don't want a contract you're better off with the apple/at&t pricing than anywhere else

Just remember that the contracts are now prorated so you take off $5/month after the first month's bill cycle starts. If you are eligible for the upgrade, you are getting a $400 discount off of retail, if eligible for an early upgrade, $200 off. This means you'll be buying the phones at $99 for the 3G 8gb, $199 for the 16gb 3Gs and $299 for the 32gb 3Gs. I have sold unlocked/jailbroken 3gs for over $300 and that was a good deal for the most part. Contract starts at $175 and declines from there for the phone so it works out to be the same kind of money as buying one no contract elsewhere.

This may make more sense in my head than what I typed since I deal with this stuff on a daily basis.
