  • is IFS the future?

I was just browsing threads on Pirate, and I came across the Jason Scherer interview. The whole interview is a good read, but this quote caught my eye.

I'm really curious how the new IFS cars will end-up working. I saw video in the rocks, the place I didn't expect them to be better, and they are really faster than solid axle cars. I expect them to take over once the technology catches up with the concept

Do you have any idea where he finished? I must suck at searching because I was real interested as far as how he finished, and I found nothing around KOH. I assumed he did terrible but apparently I was dead wrong.

IFS properly built is amazing... the only reason it doesnt catch on is its not as strong and cheap to make strong as solid axles... you can make ifs flex good if you want to you just have to have it set up right and dialed in....

I still think those CV shafts are the weak link. I snapped both mine in a matter of a few weeks on my burb. Both times with very very mild wheeling.

pretty sure the shafts in a koh buggy are a little more beef than shafts in a suburban

nah, you can even gain cleurrance if you dont suck at life building it.

solid axles will remain king for quite some time until normal people can afford the independent shit and they work out possible kinks.

and i think it will be super weird going from a solid setup to independent after wheeling solid axles for years

The HMMWV uses IFS and IRS with portal reduction boxes at each wheel for sick ground clearance, so you don't necessarily have to loose clearance.

                              It depends on the application.

Trophy trucks have been using IFS for years and rock crawling buggies have been using SFA for years, they will bleed over once in a while, but just because one or two people have IFS in rock buggies doesn't mean that IFS will trump SFA in a matter of years.
