  • interesting article...

im not trying to start any arguments here just simply forwarding some information.

i just picked up the January 2010 four wheeler mag. in it they have an install of the rough country long arm kit for the XJ.

i quote: " We recently traveled to Rough Country's headquarters in Daysburg, Tennesee, to install the 4 1/2" kit with full rear spring pack. This kit was developed using 32x11.5-15 tires on 15x8-inch aftermarket wheels with 3 3/4-inch back spacing. "

they instaled the kit on a 97+ bone stock cherokee. they used D-windows and 31x10.5 Dick Cepek F-C II tires. they measured beford and after RTI travel, f/r bumper ground clearance and approach angles.

now ive said this before and ill say it again. im not at all down gradeing the idea or obvious gains of large tires, armor, gears, lockers, any of that... but just because i wanted to do long arms does not mean i need all of that stuff for it to improve my jeeps suspension.

with that said im not getting long arms or anything but i know andrew just ordered that kit so you might wanna check out this issue got some good tips for the install.

They "develop" kits like that because they are designed to "fit" 32" tires without body modification with the supplied ride height.

Go read RE's lift descriptions and compare that against the norm here.

                    bottom line

as you can see below, the rough country long arm kit for the xj did exactly what one would exspect, and it dramaticaly improved suspension flex.on a 20* ramp we saw a 79-point improvement in the xj's rti score from a stock to modified, and a 326-point improvement in modified form with the sway bar disconnected. that's a 16.7 and 68.8 % improvement, respectively. the hight afforded by the suspension and larger tires translated to a 23 % improvement in approach angle and a 31.3 % percent improvement in departure angle. these are very welcome numbers when a rock ledge is in your path. on the road, the xj felt stable and controlled, with no weird bumpsteer after the install, albeit (idk what that means) with a slightly stiffer ride as one would expect. on the rocks, the xj crawled confidently, and there were no unhappy sounds audible as the suspension articulated. the install itself was what we expected. rough country says this kit takes a professional mechanic about 6-8 hours to install. when all said and done the rough country kit delivers, and does so at an attractive price point.

any lift and tires will give you better numbers. whats your point again? seems like you are just stirring the pot, so to speak.

so the xj flexed better with a long arm 4.5" lift than it did stock.

                              HUH!
