I'd say Zep is better - though there is a lot of controversy over their originality. I think they "borrowed" a lot of riffs and melodies.

Metallica went somewhat lame after bringing heavy metal mainstream.

It I had to pinpoint it, it would have been black sabbath, their music was markably different from their peers in that it was distinctively a heavier, and darker medium. despite having obvious musical references to more mellow styles, black sabbath are the fathers of heavy metal
