Found this page.....Its common sense, but once again the damn Cat is mentioned......If that is causing that big of a damn issue, I'm punching squirrels.
keep the yj. the 4 banger is fine for wheelin and around town and even bearable on the highway. but gears would be nice. i drove a 4 banger yj on stock gears and 33's all the way to florida. was fine. man up and keep a real jeep

1996 XJ 4-Dr
130000 Miles
Needs: New exhaust, wheels and tires ( Already have that covered ), and minor body work on the rocker panels....
Interior is clean, and the 6 runs great...
No price set, but more than likely around $600 or lower....

I dont know you or your YJ but it looks like a good deal. Are you going to wheel it? if so... don't bother with the rockers. And as far as an exhaust goes... you can get that replaced with about 2 hours of work and a couple hundred bucks. Or just rip it off . People will claim the xj needs to back pressure from the cat but its all bs, runs fine with just a down pipe - ASK HOW I KNOW.
just do shit to the YJ, 4 bangers arnt that bad, just gear it properly witch your going to have to do in any case
The 4 bangers are terrible for a few reasons, the lack of torque for off roading being the least problematic. The main reason, in my book, is that if you build it with big tires, lift, etc and DONT trailer it to wheel - the engine gets beat FAST by driving 100 miles at a time at 5000 rpms with the gas pedal stomped the whole way, just to maintain 60mph. It just wont last. However, a 4 banger with 28's is good to go .

false
it cruised the 1257 mile florida trip just fine at 2700rpm. got 16mpg and cruised at 70 fine pushin it to 75-80.

Uh, ok? Every lifted 2.5 ive seen struggled to get up a hill without getting ticketed for going below the state minimum... That trip is pretty much flat, which would help. Sounds like youve got an abnormally strong ungeared 4 cyl...
This is why I wanna keep it with the 31's......I know any higher will just kill it......It's fine around town and does great wheeling, the only issues are keeping up on the highway and going up steep hills.

I'm amazed by this too. My friend's 2.5 is so damn weak where he used to have no problems in his old 4.0. When we took a ride on the highway it was miserable.
