depends on the condition of the rest of it. honestly will, you could do an engine swap yourself. it would just take time, label everything you unhook. you are a smart cookie and think it would be doable.

now would i? depends what it's for. if you find a cheap motor, swap and sell it for profit then yes. if its for another DM then no. i know of at least 2 running 4.0ho xj's for sale for $300. you can always find an older one for cheap

if the thing is in good shape, has low miles (for the sake of the trans and t-case) and looks decent then i think it could be a good score. i would line up an engine first though if i were you. also you know we are all down to help out

4.0L engine swaps arent bad at all. I drove an hour away with basic hand tools, and a engine hoist in the back of the Comanche I had, pulled a 4.0L motor out of a cherokee (first time doing it) and it took under 2 hours in 40 degree weather. It went into the Grand cherokee I put it in even faster .

once you disconnect all the wire connectors,hoses and fuel rail line, disconnect the 2 bolts at the end of the header theres only 2 motor mount bolts and about 6 bolts (tranny) holding the motor in.

If you want to do it, just save the "junk motor out of the 97 incase you need to swap over some sensors/flywheel etc if the motor came from a different year.

You can pickup good running 4.0L motors from $150 -600 depending on mileage/condition.
