Does the roof skin on the xj provide any structural support? I have a dd xj with a roof covered in surface rust and thinking about doing a sliding ragtop to it like the liberty has. Without power slide. Just sunbrella fabric cover similar to a boat and leaving the factory crossbars in the roof.

Think i see a cage in there tho. I dont see why a cage is needed if i leave the roof crossbars tho. Its just sheetmetal that isnt even connected to the bars at points.

i trimmed the roof out on desert metal back in the day, had too few fucks though. sliding ragtop sounds like a possible leak machine though....

I dont care if it leaks. Its a beater. Just have an itch to do something stupid. Roll on paint job? Gigantic sunroof?

My 5 yr old rides in it occasionally tho so safety matters. Dont have welding abilities to brace it up. Otherwise itd be under the knife already.

If you don't mind if it leaks, chop the top and get a mesh top that just bungees into place like a spiderwebshade. Throw a tarp on it when you aren't using it.
