  • Talk me out of a daily XJ

Ok, so some of you may know that the SRT is sold

I'm going back to school and need to drop down to just one car, one TRUST WORTHY, 4x4 vehicle.

    Luckily, i've got a budget that's around 8K

For school, I'm going to be driving up 95 to Philly (2 hours) every other weekend for 2 years and need something I can depend on.

Is buying an XJ for this daily duty a bad idea? I found that you can get a reman 4.0 with a 3 year warranty for 2500 (not much research, im sure that price varies) Would it be dumb to get an XJ for 3K, drop a reman motor in it, and drive it like it's new?

I love the XJ so much and I never got to actually drive one daily, so I'd be super happy to have one for a few years while I'm in school.

Feedback, ideas, flames, insults and "Where the F have you been?" are all welcome.
    -Doug

kick ass. that's what i was hoping to hear. I figure if i get something below 120K miles, i should be fine. budget boost and 31's, it'll be set.

I missing where a trust worthy vehicle to drive to school 2 hours away every other weekend for two years, plus normal daily driving then diverges into a xj with a budget boost and 31's.

As much as you can use an xj on 31s or bigger even perfectly fine for dd duty, inherently that's going to come with more problems.

My advice, don't let your DD xj become your tinkering xj until its done being your DD xj

Oh and did I mention it has 250k on it? I also just bought another dd I've been working on, all stock with 31 inch street tires and that's got over 270k

I've been dding a totally stock xj for the past 35k miles.

Bought it for $500, put $300 into it and has been totally reliable since.

It's an 01. Only problem has been lack of power and crazy heat soak that I dealt with for a month or so trying to track it down. Turned out to be a weak fuel pump.

DO NOT modify your dd. Keep it totally stock. Way less problems that way.

Figure it's worth asking. Interested in a WJ? I have one for sale with a 4.0.

Get a WJ. Can get them cheap and are way nicer. And you can have a v8 that gets the same mileage as a 4.0

Either buy a Nicer Vic to have a while or cheap throw always. Like stock XJ/WJ for 2,000-3,000. Drive it into the ground and move on to the next one.

Why is a normal 30+mpg car not an option?

I've been driving my stock XJ as a daily driver average 400 miles a week. ~1 hr each way. For over a year, and before that was ~300 miles per week ~45 min each way.
I don't think twice about driving it anywhere.
I always change the oil and look it over every 3000 miles. things leak, a little rough idle. But other than a couple small things I haven't really touched it in about 80K.
It's got 235K on it right now.

I actually just bought a little car because gas was starting to get annoying. They get around 15mpg and my little Sentra gets 30mpg Basically saves me $40/week.

I would buy a cheaper one and replace it when something blows up.
                        Never have a $3K bill on a $1K car.

The drive train on the XJ is pretty solid.
Shift into 4x4 on the fly is nice with an actual handle unlike all the other cars out there.

I drove my xj lifted on 35s back and forth to vermont for a year every weekend. Worked fine. Drove better on the highway then my 03 tj did with 50k miles XJ for the win

I guess I want something I can DD and something I actually like. I have an '03 cavalier that I DD now, I'd keep that. The XJ would be for snow, moving things, driving something other than the damn cavi.

I kinda like the WJ, I could look into those too. I'm much more into the XJ if I'm going to get a jeep.

the Cavi gets 30+. It's a great car, but damn it's SO BORING. That's why I wanted an XJ.

A little budget boost and 31's would ruin my DD XJ? Trust me, I learned my lesson on modding a DD, so it wouldn't get much. But there's nothing wrong with a clean BB and 31's, is there?

If i got an XJ, it would be low 100's mileage wise, and something bone stock, that way I know it hasn't been beat too badly. It'd swap DD duty with the cavi, keeping un necessary mileage down. I head y'all on the modding. I wouldn't mod it out, a small lift and tires is just cosmetic to me.

The WJ tho... that's a compelling argument.... I much prefer the XJ looks wise.. but I didn't know they got comparable MPG.
