I'm restoring a butcher knife known to a few as THE YAR, here are some pics of the progress.







Finished product will have brand new grips and the metal will be mirrored.

Consider using a tropical hardwood?

I've got some santos mahogany that is supra hard/dense (doesnt float) and its natural oils resist moisture.

I've got some santos mahogany that is supra hard/dense (doesnt float) and its natural oils resist moisture.

Not for this one particularly because it's a one piece grip, so I had to use a super small mill bit to cut the wood. Anything denser would have eaten my mill bit alive, unfortunately.

I'll keep you in mind though for future projects. The only super dense stuff I have are a few pieces of African Ebony.

What's wrong with a chisel lol.

A chisel cant remove 1/100000ths of material at a time. The Yar is not something that we compromise on, Dillon. Laser NASA precision is nearly ideal for a project like this, until of course we develop better technology that will actually make it possible to achieve what we need to.

LOL. I used a chisel to square off the back of the tang when I was inletting it for final fit. Thanks for offer on the woodshop access, though!
