I have a 4.0L 5spd shortbed 4x4 Comanche. Id say that in the time of the Comanche the auto wasn't very popular across the entire jeep line up. But i don't know why they made so many 2.5L, 2wd trucks.

would it be terribly difficult to swap in an XJ auto and 4.0? im sure all the mounts etc are similar if not identical. my understanding is from the front door post to the nose the XJ/MJ are identical....

it probably isnt a huge ordeal, but I dont want a project out of it aside from building. I want the base to just be ready to go 100%
