Kit-Kat made it to #1 because it was the first to make eating a candy bar a social activity with its whole "break me off a piece"/sharing aspect. It also got points for being a world-wide popular candy bar that in some cases, was the first candy bar to break through to the mainstream public in a given country.

The article also says that there is now a specialty Kit-Kat store in Tokyo that has like, hundreds of variations of the badass candy.
