Looking into getting a VW as a DD. Mainly looking at 99-05 series TDI. Any one know a good amount about these or own one? Was considering getting a wagon cause I have a fair amount of tools to move around but would get the sedan if the wagon is more prone to problems. Just looking for basic info about what breaks and what years/models to avoid. Also, whats the big deal about the GLI trim? I've been reading tdi.forum and shit, just looking for your guys opinions.

Yeah haha. I'm debating between a Legacy or a TDI. I already had a leggy so I know a fair bit about that however the MPGs on the TDI are the main selling point for me.

The GLI is the sports edition of the car.

Better brakes, different seats, different interior, better wheels/tires, along with a whole bunch of other shit. Might have a different gearbox but i can't remember.

If you're just trying to dd it you don't need a gli unless you can find one for roughly the same price.

Not sure if the tranny on the tdi is the same as the tranny on the gas version but the MKIII (I think it's the mk3. The 92-99 models) have shit trannys. I know that for fact.

ya they all smell like burning crayons..... no clue why, my 4 so far haven't but most people who buy local seem to have that issue.

none of them hold value other than the TDIs, a GLI is the fast one, 6spd, brake, wheels, rims, suspension, NO heated seats. like 4g, same year and mileage TDI will run 7.

99.5 to 03 5 speed no issue, 2003 being regarded as the best year.
04-05.5 went to a common rail TDI which is known to eat the cam if the POs didn't use the right oil or take care of it.
autos....... about 2g to fix and a lot of guys convert over to a 5 or 6 speed. they are also even slower than the ok 5 speeds.

two ways to look a it, get a nice2003, low miles, options, some work maybe say 6500-7500. take care of it and drive the thing for ever.

get a cheap POS beater type, just put diesel into it and change the oil 2x a year, beat on it till it blows up.

I like MkIs and MkIIs. And I hate diesels.

That does not a fanboy make.

I don't like the newer TDI with the injectors inside the head the one that the cam pushes down.
                          Just really hard to diagnose.

Other than that they are pretty solid, but hard to find a good deal we end up fixing cars with 300K Used motors are really expensive to replace.
