  • If walking on a tightrope without a harness wasn't a dumb enough idea...

why not try it across the Grand Canyon?

Florida aerialist Nik Wallenda completed a tightrope walk that took him a quarter mile over the Little Colorado River Gorge in northeastern Arizona on Sunday.

Wallenda performed the stunt on a 2-inch-thick steel cable, 1,500 feet above the river on the Navajo Nation near the Grand Canyon. He wasn't wearing a harness.

Wallenda took just more than 22 minutes, pausing and kneeling twice to get "the rhythm out of the rope" and murmuring prayers to Jesus almost constantly along the way. His stepped slow and steady, but jogged and hopped the last few steps.

The event was broadcast live on the Discovery Channel.

The 34-year-old Wallenda is a seventh-generation high-wire artist and is part of the famous "Flying Wallendas" circus family — a clan that is no stranger to death-defying feats.

His great-grandfather, Karl Wallenda, fell during a performance in Puerto Rico and died at the age of 73. Several other family members, including a cousin and an uncle, have perished while performing wire walking stunts.

Nik Wallenda grew up performing with his family and has dreamed of crossing the Grand Canyon since he was a teenager.

Sunday's stunt comes a year after he traversed Niagara Falls earning a seventh Guinness world record.

Wallenda wore a microphone and two cameras, one looking down on the dry Little Colorado River bed and one facing straight ahead. His leather shoes with an elk-skin sole helped him keep a grip on the steel cable as he moved across.

seriously, even with all the practice in the world, what would possess someone to try this?

Different strokes for different folks. There's nothing wrong with what he did, nor do I consider it dumb. Its a different world, one that none of us could accomplish/understand. It really isn't anything but inspiring. Lets face it, we are living in a world where people are hungry. Hungry to push the limits and do something that nobody has done before, and as time goes on, there's less and less that hasn't been accomplished by somebody else. It's only going to get crazier, and if I had the balls/balance, I'd give it a shot as well. The feeling of knowing what you just did, is something that has NEVER been done before because you possess a skill that nobody else has, has to be such a rush..a rush that I hope all of us are able to experience at least once.

Saw it last night and I'm pretty sure I didn't breathe for the 22 minutes it took.

At first, I was like... ok with all this super religious stuff. But then I thought about it (I had time, he was babbling for 22 minutes....) If I was doing that, I'd be having a 22 minute tourettes attack.

If I was on live TV, and they told me I couldn't swear, I'd probably have nothing left to say but "JEEEEESUSSSS" too!

Enormous balls. I kept thinking, this dude is mic'd up.... I don't want to hear him if he falls, it'd mess me up for a WHILE.

                            Sad part is......

He wasn't at the Grand Canyon
                            http://www.forbes.com/sites/andrewbe...-grand-canyon/

It was still dangerous nonetheless, but it was mainly a stunt to boost tourism sales for the navajo reservation that granted him access to the "Little Grand Canyon".

....And whoever has me on FB, you saw my thoughts. With all the "Jeeeesus"-ing going on it sounded like either A) A promo for Christian Mingle dot com or B) A very religious version of Daniel Malloy.
