yeah an AR is out of the picture, for at least the immediate future. i was also looking at the ruger mini 14. but .223 is like gold now so it's hard to find

So buy a mini 30. Fires more of a manly round (7.62x39) and the ammo is relatively cheap compared to .223 these days. I love my mini and would always recommend one as a fun range gun. Not going to drive any tacks with it, but it'll be accurate enough at 150 yards.

In all honesty, I would never buy a .308 for a gun I was simply going to shoot at a range. At over $1 per round, thats going to get real old real fast. And I also have a bolt action .22, and I thought the same thing as you...that it'll get boring after a while. It doesn't, trust me. Blowing through 200+ rounds and knowing you only shot about $10 of ammo is freaking awesome. I've owned it for about 3-4 years now and I still love shooting it every time I take it out.

Get a Remington 870 pump. They can be had for less than 300 sometimes and will shoot until the day you die. I've shot mossbergs 500s too, they felt much cheaper than the rem, but will also shoot forever. I think Clay bird shooting is the most fun, but 22s are also a great time as well.
