see, in my opinion the "Boxy" is what made them famous in the first place. they dont have flowing and sexy lines in terms of something like a super car or a vette. but they have their own charm and their own lines. even if you drive a toyota corolla and live in suburbia le culde sac in the middle of jersey and have no clue what 4x4 even means....you still know that an XJ is a Jeep Cherokee when you see it. theyre kind of unmistakable. so the boxier the better!

idk you ever see all the SUVs that came out of that era...the XJ was the first unibody to make it bigtime and work well...all the imports and domestics followed suit because the XJ set the standard for what the midsized SUV should be. their shape definitely made them famous.

Motor and drivetrain say it all. Thought...the AMC Eagle had an NP231 and that really didn't go far.
