upside down is "in distress"

flag on there is oriented correctly

so that the star field faces forward, or to the flag’s own right. When worn in this manner, the flag is facing to the observer’s right, and gives the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward.

That's what I've always know as the reason for the exact same orientation on race cars...
The star field or "union" always is pointed in the direction of forward travel or advancement.
