"Assault Weapons" - Yay or Nay?

Due to my small amount of facebook friends, a comment string that Will participated in found its way to my wall. In this string, thread, whatever, the original question posed was "Why do civilians need assault weapons?"

Over the course of 80 comments, ranging from the overly dramatic and Tommy Jeff-esque, to the sensible and reasonable, people voiced their opinions to the question.

Since I'm bored, I want to see what SiS thinks.

Now, obviously there's some limitations here.

First, "assualt weapon" is a broad designation that really doesn't mean anything. So lets just establish a hypothetical for the sake of discussion.

An assault weapon is a firearm with a magazine that contains greater than 10 rounds of ammunition. Don't argue with the hypothetical because 1. it isn't important to the conversation, and 2. I really don't care.

So vote and voice your opinion. Don't simply say "Right to bear arms" because we all know what the 2nd amendment says and you'll look like an idiot.

I see assault weapon different as stated about, but I voted yes because of your definition
-If i feel the need to defend myself from home invaders I don't know if there is one or 10 so id rather not have to reload if it comes down to a shoot out
-if this country does get invaded by alien, foreign enemys, zombies, government...etc Id want to have a fighting chance of survival
-the military/police/goverment will not always be there to count on so you must count on your self
-these are all basically the same idea just worded differently
-and "bad guys" do not play fare ever so they will have real assault weapons "full auto" so I do not want to have to hold my dick while I get rapes up the ass by some gangbanger, hardcore og, fascist pig, neo nazi, skin head, nerd that's weak, gay kid that's been pushed to far, mental nut case
-these may also not be very strong points to try and hold ground with but they are my points

Are you fucking serious people? No one responds but me? I know plenty of people have read this. This is a real issue at hand, its not a bullshit wheeling run, about how cool or gay bmw's are, how I can't spell, or how calebs a ginger. A gun is a gun, if you want to shoot someone with one, that's fine, also, the definition of 'Assault Weapon' varies from state to state. An AR15 without a sporter but yet when you have a Bayonet Lug on one, it becomes an Assault Weapon.

I'm sure if we banned all assault weapons, people would just find a automatic sporting gun like a Nylon 66 and just load it up with as many rounds as they can and shoot people just as well as anything else.

Gun aren't even the issue, it's the fact that we overlook mental issues and give no thought to those who have commited atrocities in the past. Timmy McVay (?) didn't use assault weapons, he used a box truck and improvised explosives to kill a fuck load more people that the CO shooter.

But anyway, I threw a list together on why everyone needs a gun with a magazine capacity larger than 10:

1) Reloading is time consuming, especially with belt fed weapons
2) Reloading takes away from trigger time
3) Communists
4) Socialsists
5) Fascists
6) Russians (Don't want to end up like Ukraine, now do you?)

16) In the absence of an African hunting cartridge, substitute the caliber by dividing the caliber by 2 and have 5x as many rounds

Why does everything have to get bogged down in minutiae; its a theoretical discussion more than a case study. This is why nothing gets done in this country, as soon as a technical detail becomes a point of contention, the whole topic gets trashed.

Should people be entitled to own "assault weapons"? Its yes or no. Don't break my balls over the definition because most of you are human enough to consider what the media would consider an "assault weapon" when reporting on a crime.

Yes, people should be entitled to own 'assault weapons', or anything with a magazine capacity higher than 10. Not rocket science, in fact, I don't know why you're pissed. I have yet to bring up the Second, or our founding fathers, because it instantly degrades credibility.
