  • On August 5th, Curiosity hits Mars

November 26th, 2011, (my birthday ) we launched an Atlas V rocket with the robotic rover Curiosity which will, and to quote, 'begin a two-year study of whether the landing vicinity ever offered an environment favorable for microbial life'.

It will be landing inside of Gale Crater, within the projected black circle shown in the picture below. It will be operational for 2 years collecting data through ten different instruments.

The video of the landing sequence.

Human to rover size comparison. Curiosity is the rover the size of one of our Jeeps.

Bumping this for those who care, NASA will be broadcasting the landing live in Times Square, I'll be tuning in.

Technically, for us East Coasters, the rover will (hopefully) land on Mars August 6th.

All ofthat video was Good right up to the point that the rober is being controled by rockets. At 200mph those rockets are going to kick on and that thing is going to be knuckle ball city. What do you bet that rover and do hands climb.

Yeah, well, it's either going to land on Mars, or like the topic title state, it'll just fucking hit Mars.

I really hope it just fucking lands, but the whole sky crane thing has me irked.
