Chernobyl was a fuck up that couldn't happen in the states. They're reactor was enclosed in a building that was no stronger than your steel garage. Unit 3 at my work has a reactor building made of concrete 7 feet thick and is filled with re bar so thick you couldn't see through it before the poured the cement. It was built to withstand two 747 (largest plane at the time) to crash into it and still stand. On top of that the Ukrainians were far behind the US in nuclear technology and caused the unsafe shutdown which blew the thing up.

There's a video at work that they show to the people who work there about chernobyl and it shows the army running across the roof getting shovels full of pieces of the reactor and building and throwing it off the roof. Then they realized how lethal the dose was and sent robots up there. THe radiation was so great it fucked up the robots and they drove off the damn roof. Crazy shit but I agree, stuff like this is very interesting.
