the fact that you're trying to win a debate regarding breast cancer and funding is sad. is it great that you guys raised all that money? absolutely. but you aren't a better person because you jumped in the ocean. like i said, i could have donated $100, or hundred of $$s from my bed, and it's all going to the same cause. just because you put yourself in an uncomfortable situation doesn't mean people should be thanking you.

This just goes back to my argument of 'but you didn't'. The rest of that post I'm not going to bother to entertain.

but donations like that are just a social thing. sure i am sure some people care about breast cancer, but in the end, probably not even 1/10 of that would be raised if the comedy of people jumping in an ocean didnt exist

people dont have to care about every disease, i sure dont, but i hate it when people pretend to. its social shallowness IMO.
Devils advocate in response.. I don't quite understand the concept of donations being a "social thing". Cancer is a reality, and I personally am quick to not only donate, but participate in anything concerning raising money for whatever cancer it may be. In this case, it was for the West Haven Breast cancer foundation, where a very close friend of mine's mom was one of the founders of the organization, and I had a very close family member pass away from breast cancer as well. So yes, I do have a bit of an emotional attachment to raising money for the cause.
That being said, i think to state that that money wouldnt have been raised if such an event didnt go on, is well true to some degree. Hence the reason why the event takes place every year - to raise money. I can support the fact that probably 100% of the people who participated in that event either know a family member who has cancer, or who has passed away from cancer. As well as the tremendous amount of people who came out - in a snow storm - to support the people who participated in the event. To say that these people were "pretending" to support the disease is honestly a bogus statement in my opinion. I for one did not participate because I sure as hell was not going in that water - but I made sure to donate and attend the event to not only support Jon, but to support everyone else who raised money for a good cause. Anyone who participates or even just donates should feel good about doing it. It's a way to give back, regardless of if everyone thinks the money isn't going to anywhere good, and that no "cure" is ever going to come of it. I'm glad Jon did it, and honestly, it reminded me that I haven't been participating in as many events as I would like to be doing. I plan on doing the Relay for Life this year, and I encourage you all to go out and do some kind of event as well to really get a feel for what they are all about. It's not about "self gratification" it's about honoring the people who have been diagnosed with, or have passed away from Cancer.

                        / End of rant

that isnt devils advocate, that is your stance.

In common parlance, a devil's advocate is someone who, given a certain argument, takes a position he or she does not necessarily agree with, just for the sake of argument. In taking such position, the individual taking on the devil's advocate role seeks to engage others in an argumentative discussion process.

                          "donations" arent a social thing

"raising money via jumping in frigid waters" is

if i were to just donate 500 dollars of my money to cancer right now via paypal, of course that isnt a social thing.

if i were to tell people id kick ryan in the balls 50 times for every 10 dollar donation and post about it online/get coverage of it, of course thats a social thing.

I have raised lots of money and supplies for charitable causes via social means, but i dont necessarily tell people "youre welcome" for it either. hell we have had a few here right here on this website.

i'd say thats pretty fair. all im doing is giving jon a hard time either way
