June 6th, 1944, Five Normandy beaches were stormed by British, Canadian and American troops to free Europe from the German occupation.
NAZI "DOODLEBUG" NO CAN DO - Devised to play havoc with the Allied invasion waves on the beaches of France, these pilotless Nazi beetle tanks drew only derision from Yankee soldiers who promptly dubbed them "doodlebugs." A Coast Guard Combat Photographer, going in with the invaders made this first picture of the strange contraption, saw it captured before it could get into action. Operated by remote control and powered by two electric motors, this treaded, miniature tank is stuffed with high explosives.
