  • Paint rust and weld

Who can answer this for me as im always curious about this?

Why when i have 2 pieces of bare metal welded together, does it always rust at the weld after painting?

I can lay 6 coats of primer/paint/clear on this and the weld ALWAYS rusts through first. why?my subaru lightbar has 3 coats of primer, 3 coats of paint, and 1 of clearcoat, and even on that piece the weld area is rusting through all those layers. tis is without pre existing rust. bare clean metal.

goes without saying on steering and such as well.

    WTF. the northeast is fail

do you sand or lightly grind clean the welds before painting them?

Rusty welds might have something to do with trapped oxygen inside the weld bead and the weld is not exactly a pure metal. Try using a rust sealer or something like POR 15 if you want to pay that much

slightly off topic, but word is there's a POR shop in Meriden and you can go in and buy dented cans and reject stuff they can't sell to distributors. Anyone know about this or where exactly it is?
