Quoted from JP Magazine "Of course you do, but maybe you're not totally aware of the worm can you're opening when you step up to 37-inch tires. The drawbacks outweigh the benefits of the bigger meats for most of us. The truth is that if you really use your Jeep you'll likely bend the front axlehousing and prematurely wear out steering components with 35s anyway. But consider that a typical 37-inch mud tire weighs about 10 pounds more than a typical 35-inch mud tire. That may not seem like much, however it's rotating weight, meaning it's added weight that your engine has to turn and your brakes have to stop. The general rule of thumb is that every 10 pounds of wheel weight equals 100 pounds of carried weight inside the Jeep. So by going with the 37s instead of the 35s, you effectively add another 400 pounds of cargo to your Jeep. That will be a significant drag in the horsepower department, and we haven't even considered the gearing situation yet. A 35-inch tire is about 8 percent larger than the stock Rubicon tire. You can, in many cases, get by with the stock axle gears (less true if you have an automatic transmission). The 37-inch tires are over 14 percent larger than the stock tires and will require a gear swap to make your Jeep more drivable and less of a pig on-road. If you plan to stick with 37s, are you sure you want to toss money into those stock axles that likely won't hold up"
This was in reference to a JK, but all of the principals are the same and seems to make senseLast edited by Krazors001; 01-29-2011, 06:43 PM.

They discuss 35s being doable, but specifically say 37s would require a gear swap.
I'm also pretty sure that article is referring to a JK Rubicon, which runs a D44 front with 4.10s IIRC.

We have discussed this a million times.
the only thing that break axle shafts is torque.
35/33= 6% difference which isn't much.
However 35/29= 20% so that is a big difference
But where do you get torque from? basically any engine in low range can produce enough torque to snap an axle.
But you can only produce as much torque as you can react. meaning that easier to tires spin the less torque the axle will see i.e. ice.
But when you start pushing heavy vehicles, spare tires parts large bumpers winch etc it gets heavy. harder to push more torque.
Then you add larger wider gripper the tires the more traction the more the axles can push so the more torque.
Then the larger the arm length/moment arm (larger tires) the more torque the axle needs to produce to get the same amount of forward force on the ground.
So tire size alone is not the issue, weight, and traction is the biggest.
It has a lot to do with how you wheel like a few stated 35s usually give you the courage to try harder lines which you will get stuck and bind up the tires more traction more torque.
If your a woos and always take the easy lines you can make 35s last as long as you want.
I snapped 2 stock D60 on 35s so it has a lot to do with how you wheel
if you are going to wheel hard my suggestion is go one tons now.RCrocs #123 Brown CJ-5

tire size only affect's clearance below the diff's, while bigger meats help you from hanging up alot more, in most case's by picking a better route/planning your lines or occasional winching over , you can get by on small size tires. I ran 32's, 33's, 35's and 36's on my Wrangler, all worked equally well (33's being the last size I put on). On some local trails, we got a stock saggy spring early 90's s10 blazer with some little 205/75-15 tires on it through some pretty good trails, it got winched through many sections but still made itup to 40% off parts from advance auto parts, buy online and pick up at store for free-click here!
