  • Masterful crafting of steel

This build is unreal. Rocksports is getting more and more advanced by the day, and I have to say this one of the most impressive builds I have followed yet for rock racing.

Fully custom, fabbed in house by Torchmate, experimental TTB setup.
Oh and it has a 550 HP LS2.

Are there any rules as far as builds go for KOH or is it just basically do whatever you want the sky and your wallet are the limit?

There are safety rules (build and execution), and you must have a transfercase for 4WD.

Aside from that it is unlimited racing

Seems like whoever has the most money has the best chance of winning it then. Kinda lame.

As a race fan yourself I would assume you know better than that.

Lucas Murphy has a rig worth 30 grand and beat shannon campbell (150-180k worth) as well as a slew of other guys in the field with similar numbers at the KOH SMORR qualifier for first place.

I think they are on to something by wrapping the tires with duct tape. As they spin and heat up it would get super sticky.

Well, even in Nascar they have limits as far as size of engine and horsepower, regulate tire sizes, gear ratios, ect.

I know circle track and desert racing are pretty different but theres gotta be a way to atleast put the competitors on some what of a level playing field. The little guy probably doesnt have enough money to drop on an LS2 AND a crazy ass suspension setup like the rig above. How can the little guy or smaller teams keep up with a 550 hp engine when they themselves are running a 250-300 hp engine.

Even in Rcrocs they have classes to keep the playing field somewhat close in the classes. Just figured KoH would have something like that.

I agree about other forms of racing, hell desert racing in general (SCORE, BITD, so on) is fully classed out. But the concept of KOH is just that, "KING" of the Hammers.

May the best win, bring your A game. It isnt an "everyones a winner" sport where everyone gets an "equal chance" .

also depends what you call equal. Everyone in KOH has an equal chance and opportunity, it just depends how much you are willing to put forward to get it. Like I said about (certainly not the only example) a low dollar rig can beat a high dollar one, money is just one part of racing.

                Prep, skill, so on.

Think of Ultra4 (this class) as the trophy truck class of desert racing (unlimited) but you have the option of participating on a smaller budget with a cheaper trophy truck

Youre right money will always play a big factor, but thats how it is in all facets of life, i see it as plenty fair. All things considered, Ultra4 racing is far cheaper than traditional desert racing.

its cool. not a huge fan of the chassis design though.

As far as what mike said. It costs alot to be the fastest in the desert. You wanna do 120 mph you better have money..... But the great thing about this sport is someone without a ton of cash can do 70 through the go fast, but if they are a competant rockcrawler with a stoutly built drivetrain, they can essentially make up for lost time in the rocks.

This is why i think that all these desert racing guys aren't gonna kill at KOH this year. Callin' it now, It's gonna be the rockcrawlers that finish in the top places. If you are good enough to be in one of these trucks you can go fast, that part is easy. It's the rocks where the real men show what they are made of.
No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

I'm glad they don't limit engine size or any of that bullshit in KOH and 'class it out'.

Rigs like these will constantly push the envelope of offroad technology and stuff like this is just amazing to see.

I used to think that it was all about money money money and the person with the most money would win, but that changed when I watched a leaf sprung F-toy chassis cross the finish line at KOH last year. It didn't place well, but it finished and to most people, just finishing KOH is a feat unto itself. Then, at a line Mountain Race, Erik Miller was hauling ass and passing everyone until his buggy flopped. Money helps, but doesn't guarantee winning. How do you know that buggy shown won't strip a ring gear or shear a bolt or flop into a ravine and become unusable?

You cannot even compare circle track racing to KOH because the terrain changes and it's more than just flat open racing around a circle. It's all about Where you race, where you compete. A million dollar trophy truck won't help you at KOH, but like Will said, a 30k one with 4wd will.
