  • What have YOU broken on your 30.

    http://naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1051798

This thread got me thinking about what stupid stuff we do with our 30's it doesn't seem like WE (SIS) have had alot of problems with our 30's.

Post up what YOU have broken on your 30 and post up YOUR wheeling style. (i.e. "pin it to win it" or "I ride green trails cuz i am worried about the starving babies in africa")

Also Give a lil' info on what YOUR setup was.

Notice the "YOU's" are capitalized and bolded... I don't want to hear what Johnny Quest did to his 30 on Jackhammer with his stock tires in his "Dream Machine." None of this web-wheeling bullshit.

I broke a ujoint, driver side, being careless with throttle on a low traction surface. The ujoint took out the shaft ears.

Aside from that, thats all I have broken on it in 6 years of wheeling as far as i can remember...unless you count the LCA mount i ripped off.

297 shafts, 35s (for the last nearly 4 years) UNLOCKED

I dont needlessly beat on my jeep normally. I wheel "survivably" ...i prefer to spend my time wheeling as opposed to fixing.

      nice thread.

i seem to have a steering/death wobble issue on both my trail rigs.

the red xj had a DW issue which i fixed with new unit bearings, ball joints, long arms, 1 ton steering. i ran 33's and 35's locked on this d30 with 260 shafts and only a few months of 297 shafts and never broke! yes i said it.

the white xj on 33's has a DW issue right now due to bad steering/bearings/ball joints. all of this is being replaced this month with wj crossover. i haven't had this jeep long enough to break anything.

no actual trail breakage has occurred on any of my d30's thus far besides some very minor bent lca mounts on both jeeps

I've broken 4 axle shafts (two short and two long) and a ring and pinion set.

33" tires locked. Lots of stress, sometimes something has to give.

I like the way that was put. I can liken my wheeling style to just that. If I need throttle I will give it but I try to not to get too rowdy.

as far as breakage... I have not "broken" any hard parts on my 30. I have replaced wheel bearing but that is to be expected with wheeling.

My problem with the 2 Dana 30's I have had in my past Jeeps is that I put a lil' air under the tires once or twice. The first time it was intentional (OER II) and it wasn't too bad(bent the c's) but the second time was REALLY bad.

I hit a pot hole/washout on a dirt road at 25 mph and saw sky for a bit and when the dust settled I had a bent rim, FUBARED control arm mounts, a crunched fender and a very bent axle housing.

My third dana 30 is trussed,c's gusseted, RK lower control arm mounts, in hopes that I don't have an expendable axle housing.

Ive wheeled with a locked 30, on 32s, 33s, 34s, and 35s. When I wheeled on 32-34s I hit the gas, pin it to win it, as most of have seen, and Only once I "broke" it all I did was pop both ujoint caps, but I think that was mostly because of FWD.

On 35s I havent broke a thing(knock on wood), and Ive wheel with the skinny pedal but try to crawl up most things.

My 30 has 4.56 gears, a powertrax locker, factory shafts with 760 u-joints, and a ruffstuff diff cover. I am putting in a WJ set up, and Ballistic truss.

Ive gone through a two wheel bearings, but those are from normal wear and tear, I also of orginal ball joints in mine.

I only really broke regular stuff that was woren out while i was stock to 32's. When i put my 33's on is when i started poping yoke tabs (x2), and poping u-joints and blowing up diff's Oh and i also lost a brake line on the high way to a stick with my 32's. It was just after i redid the whole brake system with alll new lines too

I broke a drivers side u-joint on 31's open. My wheeling style is much like Wills, guess who I learned from?

I have been through half a dozen ujoints, a pair of wheel bearings, upper and lower balljoints on both sides, and a set of spiders gears and ring and pinion at the same time.
As far as how I wheel well the older guys know mostly fast and hard in places I am told I will not make it through.

                      My setup 4.88's open with 35" mtr's.

See, I drive a little less harshly than I used to it and other will tell you. I used to have a VERY heavy foot until I realized I couldn't afford to keep blowing ring gears and shafts. I haven't broken a D30 since last winter, so that's a plus.

now instead of breaking ring gears and shafts, he just drives into things and adds to his dent collection

I don't like skinny pedaling my way up obstacles. I've gone through wheel bearings, u-joints and a yoke. For what it's worth, the yoke was victim to my t-case blowing up and not wheeling.
