    ...but...................

I think this is getting a little Absurd.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101215/...us_safer_cribs

WASHINGTON – It's the end of the traditional crib that has cradled millions of babies for generations.

The government outlawed drop-side cribs on Wednesday after the deaths of more than 30 infants and toddlers in the past decade and millions of recalls.

It was a unanimous vote by the Consumer Product Safety Commission to ban the manufacture, sale and resale of the cribs, which have a side rail that moves up and down, allowing parents to more easily lift their child from the crib.

The new standard requiring cribs to have fixed sides would take effect in June. The move by CPSC would also prohibit hotels and childcare centers from using drop-sides, though those facilities would have two years to purchase new cribs.

CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum hailed the new standard for cribs as one of the strongest in the world.

"I believe these new standards will markedly reduce crib-related hazards and help to ensure that young children sleep more safely in their cribs," Tenenbaum said after the vote.

Around for decades, drop-side cribs have come under scrutiny in recent years because of malfunctioning hardware, sometimes cheaper plastics, or assembly problems that can lead to the drop-side rail partially detaching from the crib. When that happens, it can create a dangerous "V"-like gap between the mattress and side rail where a baby can get caught and suffocate or strangle.

In all, drop-side cribs have been blamed in the deaths of at least 32 infants and toddlers since 2000 and are suspected in another 14 infant fatalities. In the past five years, more than 9 million drop-side cribs have been recalled, including cribs from big-name companies such as Evenflo, Delta Enterprise Corp., and Pottery Barn Kids.

Michele Witte of Merrick, N.Y., lost her 10-month-old son, Tyler, in 1997 when the drop-side rail on his crib came loose, partially detached and then trapped his neck between the rail and the headboard.

"It's been a long 13 years," said Witte. "I feel like it's a celebratory time because things are finally being done about the issue."

Witte appeared at a news conference on Capitol Hill with Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., and Rep. Joe Crowley, D-N.Y., all of whom have pushed for stronger crib safety rules.

The new standard mandates tougher safety testing for cribs, tests that more closely mimic a child in a crib. As children get older, they can apply more force to the crib by shaking on it, running around in it, jumping up and down. The new tests aim to make sure the cribs can take that kind of pressure.

Better labeling on crib pieces will also be required — a measure that aims to cut down on the misassembly problems that some parents have encountered, problems that can lead to the death of a child.

Parents who lost their children in drop-side cribs say Wednesday's ban couldn't come soon enough.

Chad Johns, whose 9-month-old son, Liam, died in a drop-side crib in 2005, said he was a little relieved.

"Yes, it's a long time coming," said Johns from Roseville, Calif. "But the fact that it is happening — that's what is important."

Crib makers were already phasing out drop-side cribs over the last couple years, amid increasing problems with them. And last year, the organization that sets voluntary industry standards — ASTM International — approved a drop-side ban.

Many parents, however, still have drop-sides in their homes. They can also be found at secondhand stores.

Parents who are using drop-side cribs are advised to check the hardware on the cribs to be certain it's working properly and to make sure their crib has not been recalled. The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, which represents over 90 percent of the crib industry, says properly assembled drop-sides that haven't been recalled can be safely used.
So, according to this Article, they Banned drop side cribs because of -on average- five deaths a year BUT NOT DUE TO the Crib itself, just the shoddy manufacturing and cheap parts that make up this specific type of crib that seems to crumble under the weight of a child less than 2 years old.

    Wait what?

In the end, I don't really care if they ban the Drop Side Cribs, it's the fact that the Government banning something because of how poorly they are manufactured (China) rather than the industry holding some fucking Standards and Quality Control. How many children have choked on LEGOs and other miscellaneous toys? Should we ban those too?

I know a lot of you really don't give a shit and you think I'm a heartless bastard but what the hell? Your kids will be just like mine growing up; reading their Grammar Books in a scrap bin so they can toughen their mind and body at the same time. I just don't understand when the lawmaking is going to stop to prevent problems that can be easily solved without the Government. They are going to strengthen the cribs, too, just in time to Ban ones that are defective.

When I was two years old, I took my tricycle down a hill and hit a chain link fence at what seemed like a million miles an hour at the time. I still remember it because I still remember hitting the fence, and the fact that the Aftermath is on Home Video. Thanks, Dad! My face was bleeding and you had the Panasonic on your shoulder. LOL.

Anyway, in 50 years, I have a feeling that everyone will grow up in a padded environment and our only contact with 'sharp and dangerous objects' will be limited to government and scientific study only. And chain link fences will be made of paper mache. For laughs.

If Congress bans Lego's, I'm moving to Canada and nuking Washington from orbit.

I can't in good conscience live in a country that will not allow me to play with my plastic building blocks of fucking awesomeness.

    Try me, Supreme Court.

i love how they can waste time on this nonsense when they are clearly some much larger issues that need attention.
No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

          oh my god.

i fell down the stairs in our old house when i was in a walker....my parents had no idea i had wandered off until they heard the loud boom i think i turned out fine

parents are getting worse and worse when it comes to protecting children....organic foods, 'safer' cribs, child proofing everything & anything in the house...i think being too protective is just going to hurt them in the future

Don't worry, they've been trying to ban shotguns for years.

                    2) Are they banning stairs?

That's rediculous. My son is in a drop side crib still and we've never had an issue with it. As a matter of fact, we got it from a doctor who told us the recalls were retarded. People need to smarten the fuck up and not buy cheap ass Chinese junk cribs. I'm not saying I have the best everything, but when it comes to my child, I tend to spend the extra money on quality products.

i dont think it is am much about the parents. I know that my cousins children were always escaping their cribs. they did not have a drop down crib, but I can only imagine if they somehow got their head trapped in the bars and then it dropped, killing the kid. could you imagine coming into the room and seeing your child's lifeless body trapped in the crib.

I know that if i lost a baby that i would probably turn into a shell of a man for a while. If i had a child right now I would not be aware of a lot of things with raising a child. all parents make mistakes out of not knowing. if I had not read this article then i would not have thouht of the dangers of a drop down.

while i dont think the gov should be outlawing everything, i think this is a law that will only help people.
