so some of you may already know, but for those who dont I recently required a grand cherokee (salvage title) where the rear hatch area is damaged, slight tweaked enough that rear doors dont sit flush up top but in good condition otherwise, drives great. Ive been thinking about doing the rear chop on it for a small bed, its cool and all but i may take it the extra step. I did a quick ms paint of what i was thinking (except no rollcage added in the pic or bumpers etc.

The unibody railed will be plated front, middle and rear, the sides of the "bed" area will have tubing tied into the reinforced rails for better rigidity, also tied into a cab rollcage. The floor will be plated also. clocked t-case ,new cross-member and flat skid will be underneath.

so the question is, what do you think about doing a grand cherokee pickup ?

DO IT!!!! It will look sick with a rollcage on there too. If you had the money you could probably get a marina to make a custom soft top for it as well which would be awesome. Would the cockpit area be enclosed or just left open?

If I was to build a unit body jeep up first thing I would do is get rid of the unit body.

It is hard to mount everything to a unit body roll cages, suspension, bumpers, rock sliders, engine etc.

Just remove the 2 "frame" rails and replace with a box tubing frame.
And attach the body with body mounts.

I think this will actually save you a bunch of time and aggravation and be a lot stronger in the end.

I think I would turn it into a 2 door.
Maybe a cab and bed like a truck would be cool.

wouldn't plating the unibody rails accomplish pretty much the same thing ? body still connected but honestly it shouldn't flex the body much with the roll cage tied in.

It will be 2 door, the rear doors don't shut anyways so they will be either cut and welded (unless someone needs them, then ill just plate the space in)

this jeep will be trailered only. I've sold my TJ , so this is going to be a new long term project.

i know, i got the entire jeep in perfect drivable condition for $75, doing a cheap lift kit , set of 33s, and skidding the bitch. I wont have much money into by the time im done. the only reason they salvaged it because the repair cost was pretty close to kbb value. I learned my lesson with my wrangler going from 32's to 33, 35's, 36's etc

Do it. For $75 it's worth it to see how it turns out.
